Our Special Approach to Diversity Training: We Bring You These Powerful Advantages Our Special Approach to Diversity Training: We Bring You These Powerful Advantages

1- We Deliver Diversity as a Highly Positive Experience

Because our mission is to help people create a workplace where they would say, “Thank God It’s Monday!” our training delivers diversity as an upbeat experience that touches the hearts and minds of participants, contributing to a more enduring impact on behavior.

  • From the first moment in the workshop, our “Opening Exercises” deliver mind-opening experiences that shatter participants’ comfortable “Business-As-Usual” frame of mind, and put them in touch with an exciting new possibility of learning and openness.
  • Participants move from one dramatic experience to the next, absorbing powerful insights, sharing new thoughts and feelings, and learning to think and relate to others in new, more positive ways.
  • Participants leave the workshop feeling highly committed to diversity and empowered to celebrate it and live it at work.

2- We Use a Variety of Delivery Media to Appeal to Various Learning Styles 2- We Use a Variety of Delivery Media to Appeal to Various Learning Styles

Our continuously interactive onsite training is a multi-sensory, multi-style experience that stimulates and appeals to participants' various learning styles.

  • Our workshops use a Blended Media / Experiential learning approach for maximum learning impact.
  • We using music, language, images, stories, activities, role-plays, and self-discovery tools to meet a variety of learning styles.
  • We use stimulating quizzes, powerful role plays, mind-expanding activities, videos, music, and slides, all working together to deliver an exhilarating, passionately positive experience about diversity at work.

3- The Personal Case Leads to the Business Case 3- The Personal Case Leads to the Business Case

Our extensive experience has shown that people will not commit to the business side of diversity without first adopting diversity as a personal commitment.

  • Our training helps participants develop this all important “missing link” of diversity programs.
  • The presenter, Francois Basili, offers his powerful, personal experience with diversity as a vivid example of how diversity touches everybody's life in a personal way, before even looking at its value to business life.
  • We offer diversity training in a balanced blend between the business and the human sides of diversity. This presents diversity at its best. It helps people adopt it as part of their value system as well a way of doing business in working with colleagues and customers.
  • We never present diversity in a heavy handed way, or in a condescending style. We deliver it with great respect to participants’ values, in a way that provides a model for participants to learn from and adopt.

4- Real Learning: Moving from Awareness to Skills for Working Together 4- Real Learning: Moving from Awareness to Skills for Working Together

A lot of diversity programs stop at providing “awareness” of the concept of diversity at work, leaving participants with no specific skills that help them put this awareness into practice.

  • Our training moves from awareness to specific skills in the areas of communication, interviewing, supervision, performance management, coaching and feedback, and teamwork.
  • We don’t just deliver a highly positive motivational experience. We deliver real learning, with powerful concepts, day-to-day work examples, and practical skills people can use at work.
  • A skeptical highly educated executive at the largest public library system in the US wrote in the evaluation sheet after one of our workshops:

“I thought the session would be a waste of time. I learned a lot.”

Our simulation exercises / role-plays with coaching from the trainer provide practical opportunities for learning the   know-how of communicating and working together with sensitivity to diversity. The general concepts are put to actual work experiences right in the workshop.

5- Beyond the Classroom: Diversity as a Force for Culture Change 5- Beyond the Classroom: Diversity as a Force for Culture Change

Diversity training can be a powerful agent for changing the organizational culture and creating a positive, productive and respectful workplace.

  • Diversity is not just a valuable concept in itself, but it also acts as a means toward other worthwhile ends. The applications of diversity concepts at work make it a force for helping people work together more effectively in a supportive, respectful environment.
  • We help participants see and work with diversity as a corporate culture “state of mind” and “a way of doing business.”
  • The training includes built-in tools to apply the learned skills on the jobs for months to come, helping create an organizational culture that values and celebrates diversity at work.

Basili's Diversity Training Covered by National Magazine Basili's Diversity Training Covered by National Magazine

Francois Basili ( currently president of Communication Ideas) as appeared in his interview piece by Hospitals Magazine, which covered his early pioneering work in diversity training in 1990. The Bureau of National Affairs invited Basili to participate in their video- based training program, “Bridges.”

In 2003, Basili was twice interviewed by Diversity Inc. magazine on his views of the impact of cultural differences in the situation in Iraq.

in July 30, 2003, Basili made a presentation on diversity to the attendees of the Strategic Research Institute's conference on Multicultural Equity in New York City.

We Pioneered Diversity as a Cultural Force. We Continue to Renew It and Move It Forward We Pioneered Diversity as a Cultural Force. We Continue to Renew It and Move It Forward

Our early work in diversity training in the nineties attracted national recognition from prestigious publications like Hospitals and organizations like The Bureau of National Affairs.

Now we are pushing the envelop again. Our current work in taking diversity to its logical next step is achieving similar recognition. Our new training workshop, "Diversity at Work" is already helping leading organizations set a new standard for their diversity programs.

Diversity At Work now offers the most comprehensive treatment of diversity in a training program.

We cover all key aspects of diversity, from

  • CULTURAL ETHNIC DIVERSITY, to
  • GENDER DIVERSITY, to
  • GENERATIONAL DIVERSITY, to
  • DISABILITY / ADA DIVERSITY. 3- The Personal Case Leads to the Business Case

All with case studies, activities, and step-by-step instructions, supported by PowerPoint slides and participant workbooks.

How Men and Women Can Work Together More Effectively

Our Diversity At Work training program covers this fascinating area of inquiry into the different ways men and women think, communicate, and work together. The research-based content, case studies, and discussion in this area – often neglected by some diversity programs, adds an important, highly relevant aspect to your diversity program.

How the Mature Generation Can Work Effectively with Generations X and Y

Diversity At Work program also covers the new area of Generational Diversity at Work. We cover, with research based content and case studies, the key characteristics of the four generations of workers in today’s workplace; The Mature Generation; the Baby Boomers; Generation X; and Generation Y. Participants will be able to identify and better understand the value system and preferences of each generation, enabling them to work more effectively together.

Our Training Moves Participants from the Personal Case to the Business Case of Diversity

How to Work with Persons with Disabilities

Diversity At Work also covers the area of ability and disability at work and offers guidance and case study relevant to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its requirements for organizations and managers. Participants will be able to understand what the law requires and how to work more effectively and fairly with persons with disabilities.

Imus and Five Diversity Lessons – A Case Study Imus and Five Diversity Lessons – A Case Study

Imus is a famous radio and TV talk show host in the US. Last week, he made a racist, sexist remark about the young women Basketball team players of Rutgers University, who reached the final game and lost, to achieve second place in the country, a great achievement by all accounts. Even though Imus was used to insulting people and groups on racial and ethnic grounds under the disguise of “humor” and in the American tradition of protecting freedom of speech, he was fired first by MSNBC and then by CBS.

What are the diversity lessons other organizations, and leaders, should learn from this? Read the article below.

For no clear reason, Imus used a racist, sexist language to describe the young women athletes after their achieving a second place in the national college women basketball competition. Instead of saluting them, he insulted them, an act many people found shocking and offensive. When the word spread, the Rutgers Basketball team gave a press conference that captivated the nation. The young athletes, mostly in their late teens and early twenties, came across very mature and dignified. They, and their coach, spoke eloquently and logically about the needless, uncalled for insults directed at them by Imus and showed restraint and respect that was a glaring contrast to the street-level language and juvenile “humor” offered by the Imus show. The country immediately took the side of the young women. Meanwhile, a number of Black civil right leaders organized marshes and called for Imus’ firing. Proctor and Gamble, a huge advertiser on Imus show, decided to pull their ads, and a number of other advertisers followed. MSNBC, then CBS, canceled the Imus show for good. The episode was the talk of the country for several days.

Five Lessons Learned

  1. Even though most businesses in the US provide extensive diversity training to their employees, it’s clear that some have not gotten the diversity message still. The consequences, as in the Imus case, could be the loss of tens of millions of revenue dollars, not to mention the loss of productivity and the cost of high turnover by offended employees.
  2. In many organizations, top leaders and the stars of the organizations do not attend the diversity training. They perhaps think that they already know the message. Often the organization’s leaders and big-name stars are the ones who need the message the most, as it has been proven by the Imus episode.
  3. Employees have a role to play and a power to exert in ensuring that their workplace is one of respect and dignity for all. In the Imus episode, MSNBC president said that their own employees raised their voices against what Imus said and the company found itself in a position that required it to live up to its own values and ideals so it decided to fire Imus, which it has every right to do.
  4. The organization’s other stake-holders, like vendors, advertisers, customers, and the public at large, also have an important role to play to ensure that the organization they deal with is a good corporate citizen that plays fair and respects people and the values of diversity.
  5. Diversity training is still needed in the US and in other countries. Because of diversity and sexual harassment prevention training, the American workplace today is much more respectful and hospitable to employees than a decade or two ago. But we need to continue the great effort to ensure that the remaining few who still cling to an old notion of a destructive and negative work culture learn their lessons, before they are forced to leave the workplace all together.
