Does Your HR Department Kiss Up or Kick Down?
Does the Human Resources department (HR) of your organization deserve a recognition of excellence? Based on my knowledge of many organizations, the HR department is blamed far more often than it's recognized. Most likely that’s the case at your organization. Nevertheless, I was shocked to read the following paragraph in the Editorial section of the “HR Exec of the Year Issue” of Human Resource Executive magazine, “ As we were soliciting nominations for this year’s HR Executive of the Year, we received in the mail a most unusual reply. The letter was written by the chief executive officer of a major Fortune 200 company. In it, the CEO thanked us for our call for nominations, but noted that he couldn't think of a single HR leader who deserved such a recognition.”
David Shadovitz, editor of Human Resource Executive, continued his editorial piece titled Better HR saying, “ Perhaps this CEO has good reason for responding the way he did. But as this year's selections for the HR Executive of the Year and Honor Roll prove, HR excellence is clearly alive and well- and making a remarkable difference in certain organizations.” The winner this year was Bill Conaty, General Electric's senior vice president of corporate human resources. Why? GE's former chairman Jack Welch points out that Conaty is especially unique in that he was able to earn the trust of those above and below him. “ Some HR people kiss up; some HR people kick down people,” he says. “He's almost the opposite. He kicks up. He challenges the CEO and keeps confidence in his people. That's one of the great things he does.”
So how does your HR department compare? Does it kiss up, kick down, or kick up?
You can get HR Executive and other HR and non-HR magazines at no cost to you.

More Than a Gut Feeling III: Updated version of American Media's all-time, best-selling video!
How-To Training Points: How to plan a logical, structured interview that includes pre-planned interview questions../ How to recognize the importance of developing an interview plan based on thorough knowledge of the job../ How to understand that a behavioral example is a specific life-history event that can be used to determine the presence or absence of a skill.../ How to use interviewing techniques that allow for interviewer control ../ How to explain why it is important to make selection decisions based on facts and information, not on a gut feeling ../ How to explain why the concept of "the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior" is so important in the behavioral-based interview process../ How to recognize why some questions cannot be legally asked in the interview process
More Than a Gut Feeling III teaches you to select the most qualified job candidate by applying the ever-popular behavioral approachª to interviewing. This method, developed by industrial psychologist Dr. Paul Green, directs you to probe the job applicant for specific examples of their past. The reason is simple: The best predictor of a job applicant's future work behavior is their past work behavior.
Viewers of More Than a Gut Feeling III will learn helpful job-related interviewing techniques practiced by so many hiring staffs all over the world. You can refrain from judging an applicant on gut feeling by: asking rapport-building questions; discussing the job; taking notes and explaining why; asking specific, open-ended questions to get specific answers; allowing for silence if necessary; maintaining control; getting contrary evidence and evaluating. This video applies these techniques to the most common interviewing situations and helps you to refrain from judging the candidate on intuition.
SPECIAL FEATURE: Dr. Paul Green introduces the video with a personal message about his behavioral approach to interviewing and concludes the video with questions to think about the next time you interview a job candidate.

It shows managers how to supervise disabled employees and develop reasonable accommodations that fit both the individual and the job.
Key learning points include:
- Defining disability.
- Legal obligations and procedures.
- Who's covered.
- Medical issues and exams.
- Job descriptions and essential job functions.
- Proper documentation.
