Halogen Foundation Singapore has the mission to inspire and influence young people to lead themselves and others well. To date, we have touched the lives of 17,000 youth from 15 countries in Asia. We at Young Leaders Academy, the training arm of Halogen Foundation, work with young people to let them know that leadership is not about being in a position of power but about being in a position of influence – and using that influence to make a positive impact to society. We believe that every young person has the innate ability to lead but not everyone gets the opportunity to nurture this ability. We try to make leadership education available to all young people and not just a privileged few.
With a rich diversity of cultures all over Asia, understanding, appreciating and even celebrating this diversity is important in building young leaders who see past race, status, gender or religion to find the leader within themselves as well as to lead others effectively. Cross Cultural Communication and Diversity Training is key. We hope you will consider us to be a recipient of a full scholarship to the program.
Whether I’m teaching a class in a public school in a remote neighborhood or I’m in a private school somewhere at the heart of the city, I always get the same number of hands raised up in the air in response to the question “How many of you consider yourself to be a leader?” There will be around one or two. Hopefully someday soon, when I enter a classroom again and ask the same question, all hands will be raised up in the air, firmly and confidently.

Take Advantage of Our Scholarship Programs

If you attend one of our exciting learning and train-the-trainer / certification events in New York City on a partial or full scholarship, you will get to attend all the sessions and receive all the materials: leader’s guides, participant’s workbooks, PowerPoint slides, assessments, and tools that full paid participants receive. And you will also receive HumaNext Affiliation Certificate that makes you eligible to deliver the programs you learn and receive to your internal or external clients.
Already several persons and organizations have enjoyed the benefits of our scholarship programs and some of them were able to deliver our programs to their clients within one month of attending. Read below for how you can do the same..
- Most people are eligible for the Partial Scholarship in exchange for interning for us or helping us with marketing and administration work.
- The full scholarship is usually limited to small non-profit organizations, recent graduates, and new consultants.
- Both scholarships do not include travel and accommodation expenses.
- We do not get involved in any visa processing to visit the USA to attend the sessions and cannot offer any assistance in this matter.

You May Qualify for a Full or Partial Scholarship
|
Our Full Scholarship Program
- A limited number of Full Scholarships may be given - at our sole discretion- to members of small non-profit organizations, recent graduates, and new consultants (less than 5 years in business.)
- The full scholarship entitles you to attend to learn the programs and to deliver them for a period of two years from date of attending. After that you may deliver them for the regular annual license fee for your certification (usually between $199 to $299 depending on the program) paid to HumaNext (subject to increase in subsequent years.)
- The full scholarship requires the payment of $289 materials and processing fee.
- The services to be offered by you in exchange will be similar to the variety of tasks described in our Partial Scholarship Program.

Our Partial Scholarship Program
You may be eligible for our Partial Scholarship
per the following terms:
In exchange for the scholarship amount you receive, you agree to offer us, as an independent contractor, a number of hours of services at the rate of $50.00 per hour. So, if your scholarship amount is $500, you need to offer us 10 hours. If your schoralship is $300 you need to offer us 6 hours of work. You must complete these hours within 100 days from attending the workshop.
You can choose to do any one or combination of the following tasks, with coordination with HumaNext:
1- Introduce our Thank God It’s Monday newsletter to your colleagues to subscribe to it at no cost. You can do this by forwarding our newsletter to your list, or by emailing them a link to our website.
2- Email your colleagues informing them about our websites and programs.
3- Recruit people to attend one of our workshops.
4- Submit our press-releases to the media.
5- Help us with administration work before / after our workshop sessions (must be agreed to by HumaNext in advance.)
6- Post articles and information from www.newtrainingideas.com on other web sites
7- Write articles on relevant topics for our newsletter / websites.
8- Write testimonials about your experience with our workshops to use in various media.
9- Create PowerPoint presentations about our work.
10- Create training materials, activities, quizzes, etc for us to include in our programs or websites.
After completing your work, you email us information about / description of the kind of work you did, with the number of hours spent.
If you do not complete the work within the required 100 days after attending the sessions, you must pay back the amount of scholarship you have received. An invoice will be sent to you for this purpose.

Law For Kids : Bringing Court Drama to the Classroom (Winner of HumaNext’s Full Scholarship Award- May 2006)

The purpose of the non-profit Foundation for Relevant Education About the Law (R.E.A.L.) - www.relevantlaw.org - is to break down the barriers between the courts and the public. We provide learning opportunities to students in three ways: by contact with the court system (court tours), our interactive web sites, and through the school curriculum. We have a program currently being designed that will use drama to bring judicial issues into the classroom. It is our goal that students understand and actively participate in the democratic process, and become effective and responsible citizens.
One aspect of Project R.E.A.L.’s website is of particular interest. Students often have difficulty gaining access to accurate, impartial legal advice. This is particularly true of ‘at risk’ students. This advice might relate to a drug arrest or some other crime, or it might relate to some other aspect of a divorce or other family issue. Perhaps a child would like to know the answer to such questions as: “If my parents get divorced will I have to visit daddy/mommy every two weeks (whether or not I want to)?” “Will I be able to keep my dog?” “Do I get any choice where I live?”
Such questions may not be answered accurately by a parent, and the child may not want to approach a school counselor or other individual that the child may not perceive as impartial. LawForKids.org, of which Project R.E.A.L. is the Nevada licensee, offers kids the opportunity to get their questions answered (in a generic, rather than one-on-one fashion) by a qualified lawyer.
Training is an important part of our mission, and is critical to our success. Being able to effectively communicate to sponsors and the legal community is also critical to the achievement of our goals. I believe the skills acquired during your 3-in-1 training program will help us achieve this.

For Every Child, a Place to Play: Previous Winner of Our Full Scholarship Award (October 2005)
The following submission letter won one of our Full Scholarship Awards in 2005:
In 1994, I saw a little girl sitting in a wheelchair on the fringe of a park, her fingers tightly gripping the spokes of her wheelchair as she longingly observed other children at play, and something tugged at me. I understood that for this little girl, playing at a playground could only be a wish, a dream, and a frustration as she was excluded from one of the fundamental joys of childhood.
I felt compelled to do something to address this injustice. Shortly after that observation at the park, my five-month-old son died. In his memory, with the assistance of 1,200 volunteers, I built a playground, Jonathan's Dream, that was barrier-free and where all children could play.
An article about the playground in Time magazine generated hundreds of inquiries. In response to this outpouring of calls for assistance, I, along with play environment designer Jean Schappet, formed Boundless Playgrounds in 1997. To date, 76 playgrounds are open in 20 states and one in Canada. As the first national nonprofit organization dedicated to opening the world of play to children of all abilities, Boundless Playgrounds will not stop until every child everywhere has the opportunity to play.
I believe that if children with disabilities are excluded from playgrounds, both children with and without disabilities will suffer from the lack of opportunity to interact and learn to get along with others. This kind of exclusion leads to isolation and intolerance. In the future, children will become parents, teachers and leaders. They will shape our world. By growing up learning to accept those with differences, the world will be a more peaceful and accepting place.
When children of all abilities are given the opportunity to play--true play that is independent and self-directed--they play with a purpose. Through play children achieve one of the most basic rights of being a person, the right to make choices. During play children make choices that help them gather information through physical and sensory experiences and by watching other children at play. Boundless Playgrounds' fully integrated playgrounds are designed to remove the barriers that limit children's explorations and support their need for independent self-directed play.
I strive to assure that no child, regardless of ability or disability, is ever left out of the magic of play. The organization's mission and vision--For every child, a place to play: Every child! Every ability! Everywhere!--is the impetus for this nonprofit to continue to help communities create barrier-free playgrounds where all children are welcome.
